Vanilla #178®

Growing up I remember Sunday afternoons were reserved for fun, family gatherings at my cousin’s house. Many times, my Uncle Chet would make his amazing homemade vanilla ice cream. As soon as he dished it up, the neighbors would show up and make the whole thing a big party. The flavor of that ice cream was the best. I’m not sure what made it so good. Was it the ingredients or the passion he put into making that ice cream? Whatever it was, I sure do miss it. I told this story to a couple of the craftsmen at 2nd Street Creamery and they took it upon themselves to make it their mission to recreate Uncle Chet’s famous vanilla ice cream. It wasn’t easy as there was no written recipe; no samples to re-engineer….only my recollection to guide them. But 178 taste tests and a pile of plastic sampling spoons later, they did it! Exactly like Uncle Chet’s and exactly as my taste buds remembered it. We named it Vanilla #178 because we’re not sure what ingredients Uncle Chet put in his ice cream, but I’m pretty sure that batch 178 was made with just as much passion and the right amount of care to get it to taste just as I remember it.
